Biography

Dr. Slakey is a Professor of Surgery and a Clinical Professor of Urology and Paediatrics. He was the Director of the Tulane Center for Abdominal Transplantation from 1998 until 2006, when he became Chair of the Tulane Department of Surgery. He received his undergraduate and graduate education at the University of California at Berkeley. His Masters in Public Health had a focus on the Epidemiology of Infectious Disease and Healthcare Administration. His medical school and general surgery residency were at the Medical College of Wisconsin. While there, he was the Administrative Chief Resident and he maintained an active research program studying aspects of transplant immunology. He received several awards for his research and has presented his results across the United States and in several countries around the world. He has experience in both adult and paediatric transplantation, including advanced procedures such as living related and split liver transplantation. He has an active hepatobiliary surgical practice treating patients with benign and malignant disease. Dr. Slakey's interests also extend to advanced laparoscopic surgery. He was the first surgeon in the south-eastern United States to perform laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy for renal transplantation. In addition, he is one of the first surgeons to perform major laparoscopic liver resections. Dr. Slakey is very active in the transplant community. In addition, he has continued his research interest in clinical and basic science studies in transplant immunology, advanced laparoscopy, and other aspects of advanced surgical science.
